수학에서의 쌍대성

초록

"해결하기 어려운 문제가 있다고요? 한번 뒤집어서 생각해보실래요?"

일상생활에서 우리는 ”안“과 ”밖“, ”열림“과 ”닫힘“, “왼쪽”과 “오른쪽”처럼 서로 떼어낼 수 없는 개념들을 자주 만날 수 있습니다. 이런 관계를 수학에서도 발견할 수 있으며, 이를 duality(쌍대성)이라고 합니다.

이번 세미나에서는 집합론, 위상수학, 선형대수학 등 여러 수학 분야에서 나타나는 쌍대성을 예시를 통해 확인해보고자 합니다. 그러면서 반대를 생각했을 때 얻을 수 있는 이점에 대해 얘기해보고자 합니다. 또한, 여러 수학분야에서 튀어나오는 이 개념을 범주론의 언어론 어떻게 나타낼 수 있는지, 이와는 별개로 범주론에서 등장하는 쌍대성에 대해서도 얘기하고자 합니다.

Abstract

"Struggling with a difficult problem? Try looking at it from the opposite direction."

In everyday life, we often encounter pairs of concepts that cannot be separated from one another, such as “inside” and “outside,” “open” and “closed,” or “left” and “right.” Similar relationships also appear in mathematics, where they are known as duality.

In this seminar, we will explore examples of duality that arise in various areas of mathematics, including set theory, Topology, and Linear Algebra. Through these examples, we will discuss the advantages of considering the opposite or dual perspective.

Furthermore, we will examine how this idea—appearing across many branches of mathematics—can be expressed in the language of Category Theory. In addition, we will also discuss forms of duality that arise specifically within category theory itself.
